The DIY Chignon - How to create a Simple Chignon

A chignon is a must for those who want a pulled together hairstyle they can create in minutes. It takes some effort, but practice makes perfect. Check out these easy tips for creating a chignon with a few simple steps.

1. Smooth hair out. To achieve Smooth Hair you need a good quality hairdryer and a Boar/Nylon Brush.  Then, if you need help to create a Salon Quality Smooth Blowdry, watch our Video Tutorial which will teach you the Tools and Techniques to create a Smooth Blowdry.

2. A chignon works best on day-after hair (as in, day after the hair has been washed). Smooth the hair by running a brush through it and applying a smoothing product. Pull hair back into a ponytail at the nape of the neck.

3. Split the ponytail into two equal sections. Take one section and gently twist it, wrapping it around the base of the ponytail and securing it with tonal bobby pins (bobby pins that match your own hair). Do the same with the remaining section.

3. Now you have a chignon at the nape of the neck. Smooth the top and sides of the hair down with a lightweight hairspray. Spray the chignon too. This look doesn’t have to be perfect. It looks gorgeous with smooth straight hair, but also looks lovely with wavy or curly hair.

The chignon works for making a little black dress chic, but don’t save it for special occasions. Once you become accustomed to the chignon, you’ll notice it works for day too. Wear it with a suit or blouse and skirt to work, or use it to polish off a casual look of a trendy top and jeans.  Wearing a chignon is also a prime opportunity to wear statement earrings or a large eye-catching necklace. In terms of makeup, try a smoky eye or a bold lip when wearing a chignon hairstyle.
